Hospitals

Doctors in India are becoming quite insensitive to those women who knock on their door for terminating their fetus. Certain female doctors abuse women by pushing them to feel remorse for abortion. What is quite appalling is that there are hospitals in Chennai (I bet through out India) that are affiliated to a religious institution which refuse to provide emergency contraception as well as deny a woman's right to abortion at a very early stage of pregnancy. These hospitals turn them away and try to influence to carry on with the pregnancy which is barbaric and violates a woman's right to life and liberty.

What a shame!

May be the CJI has to be reminded about freedom of speech. Exercising her right to speak was Kushboo's only offense.
No matter what the questions were, her right to speak freely should be paramount. Why is the CJI having a digestion issue when Kushboo did not talk about a particular person? One would wonder if the supreme court would feel the same on the "judge assets" case.

The entire judicial system should feel ashamed for entertaining such a frivolous suit along with the persistent persecution. If the supreme court, quashes the case, one would wonder if the supreme court would order prosecution for judicial misconduct of those judges who accepted those suits to continue in the lower courts.

The whole episode is a mere proof, that victims are always harassed by the entire system and they have to defend themselves at a court for being "victims".

What a shame!

Your safety is our priority - TN Police?

It is heart wrenching to see the video of the grievously injured sub inspector clinging for his life. The Tamil Nadu police department should hang its head in shame. If they can not help one of their own in time, one would wonder their priority to work towards the safety of their fellow citizens.

Their mission statement "To work towards a safe, just, humane and progressive society" is overwhelmingly negated.

Every uniformed officer in the vicinity should be summarily dismissed along with the state ministers who were just making phone calls. Precious minutes were wasted while the injured was struggling on the road. They should have calmed him down and provided him with comfort until some help arrived.

The emergency response system is abysmal and it is high time to overhaul the system. An ambulance van which can not reach a victim within few minutes would turn out to be a hearse van.

The henious crime of attacking the victim is overshadowed by the acts of those who stood there and did nothing to help.

The entire episode makes one thing well loud and clear that there is no value for life in India.

Oath of office - Goof up

I can not imagine any conspiracy theory to the initial administration of oath of office to President Obama by Chief Justice John Roberts. First he called Mr.Obama a senator then he went on to mix the words in the oath as prescribed by the US constitution. I don't want to dismiss the whole episode as a simple mistake. Mr. Roberts showed sheer arrogance to the process and ignorance to the US constitution. People had greater expectation from the constitutional office of the Chief Justice but Mr.Roberts made the entire episode beyond disappointment.

The goof up is similar to an elementary school teacher reading the alphabets in a different order. The position of the chief justice being a higher constitutional post, should not have goofed up the very basic thing. If he can not prepare himself for a process that takes under two minutes, one wonders how he can preside over a lengthy trial. If Mr. Roberts did not want to administer the oath of office or if did not want a black man to be the US president, he could have recused himself by resigning from the post.

The chief justice not only stole the thunder from billions of people watching the inaugural session all around the world but exhibited his contempt towards the will of the American people.

No value for life

It is heart wrenching to see a man in Pondicherry who literally bled to his death. because of lack of medical transport at a major train station. To rub salt in the wound, he was transported in a tricycle. There are so many Indians who die a tragic death like this.

There are no modes of public transport from the train station even though the station is inside the city. The ambulance service in most of the cities are associated with some major hospitals and has different phone numbers to reach them. The golden time to transport an accident victim is orphaned by such a complex process. Until the government comes up with an integrated emergency response apparatus through out the country there will absolutely be no value for life.

An assault on democracy

Terror attacks in Mumbai is a direct assault on democracy. There is virtually no accountability to these dastardly acts. The Indian government is being soft on terror convicts such as those in the 2001 Parliament attack case and the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. The punishment laid down by the law and upheld by the courts should be immediately acted upon. Difficult times require not just difficult decisions but wise decisions. If the Mumbai terror attacks are not to become just additions to a long list, the response should be hard.

Creation of a central agency is in the right direction but without a political will to fight terror, the new agency has no meaning. The Indian coast guard along with the Indian Navy was caught napping on the job. The national security adviser kept his job even after an assault on what he was supposed to advise upon. The President cut short her state visit only after two days from the attacks. The home minister became the scape goat for the tragedy. The entire episode exposes the security apparatus in deep chaos and confusion.

After all, securing a constitutional right to life and liberty should not be hard fought. We did that already until the 15th August of 1947.

Abortion

Two male judges of the Bombay High Court decided the fate of a fetus and the prerogative of a pregnant woman. A woman should have a constitutional right for an abortion when there is a decision in good faith that the fetus would suffer even from a minor handicap. Apparently, a fetus does not have any right but the rights of the pregnant woman should not be overshadowed by the lack of rights of the fetus.

The effect of legislation dictates what stays in a womb for how long and the judicial overview closed the door with its helplessness. Justice has not been well served in this case because of a grey area in the law.

The Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act of 1971 is a handicap in itself when, it did not define the term “serious handicap” in section 3; by providing an arbitrary gestation period of 20 weeks before an abortion and above all by excluding the women of Jammu and Kashmir.
